SterilTub

Gorenje's self-cleaning program SterilTub

Have you ever taken a freshly washed batch of laundry from the washing machine only to find that coloured items, particularly towels, have a foul odour? Regardless of whether you air-dry or use a tumble dryer, whether you fold and store it in the closet immediately after ironing or let it on the shelves in the utility room for a while, your laundry always has an unpleasant smell of moisture that you just cannot explain.

Proper care of your laundry requires perfectly clean washing machine interior. Gorenje experts have developed a special self-cleaning program called SterilTub which heats the water to 80 or 95 °C to deliver perfect hygiene in your washing machine.

Do away with the foul odour

Washing at lower temperatures with mild phosphate-free detergents is environmentally sound, but it has a downside to it: it allows residues of detergent and dirt in the washing machine tub to build up, providing an excellent setting for development of bacteria. As a result, laundry that may be normally washed and dried will develop an unpleasant smell upon the first contact with moisture. This may lead to a conclusion that laundry is inadequately washed and it may be all but obvious that bacteria are the perpetrator.

To avoid such problems, Gorenje experts developed a special self-cleaning program called SterilTub which they recommend running once per month; this will simply wash away the problem. The program takes a good hour and a half to run, with an empty drum and high water temperature Cotton 95 °C (or Cotton 80 °C). A large quantity of hot water, at double-the-normal spinning speed, will reach even the most remote corners of the tub and effectively wipe out the bacteria built-up there. Hence, your laundry will be treated most efficiently even when washed at lower temperatures and with environmentally-friendlier detergents. And most importantly: there will be no more foul smell!

How does it work?

The SterilTub self-cleaning program is automatically activated when the program Cotton 95 °C without prewash (or Cotton 80 °C) is selected with the program selector dial, and the self-cleaning button is pressed. First, the washing machine will pump out any remaining water from the tub and turn the drum a few times to make sure it is really empty. If any laundry is detected in the machine, the program will automatically switch off. Then, it pumps in fresh water and heats it to 80 °C. After that, the drum is spun at very high speeds to splash the water into the upper part of the tub while the water-heater keeps its temperature above 70°C continuously for at least 35 minutes; this effectively kills any bacteria. The effect can be further improved by adding a small amount of detergent. The procedure may be carried out once each month.
